Fairtrade Fortnight Event at Sainsbury’s Stafford

22nd February – 13th March, 2012-02-17

We’re the world’s biggest retailer of Fairtrade, with a 33.6% share of the Fairtrade market (Kantar Worldpanel Total Grocery 52w/e 28th November 2010).

We have 15 categories which are 100% Fairtrade and we’re working on converting other categories all the time. The 100% Fairtrade categories are:

  • Bananas (it’s also 5 years since we converted all our bananas to Fairtrade);
  • Selected Tea;
  • Roast & ground coffee;
  • Hot chocolate & drinking chocolate;
  • Plain cotton T-shirts;
  • Kenyan oriental lilies;
  • Kenyan roses;
  • Tea, coffee and hot chocolate from our instore Cafés - excl. speciality teas (it is 6 years since we converted these to Fairtrade);
  • Taste the Difference Fairtrade Single Origin Chocolate;
  • South African own label wine;
  • Taste the Difference Hollow boxed Easter eggs; and
  • Herbs.

We have over 800 Fairtrade products in store and many more in the pipeline. By buying these products our customers provide farmers and workers in the developing world with guaranteed prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade.

The Fairtrade premium on these products is invested in social, environmental or economic development projects such as literacy courses that benefit their community.

Fairtrade Fortnight is a two week campaign where the Fairtrade Foundation promotes Fairtrade products and the principles of Fairtrade throughout the UK.

During Fairtrade Fortnight we want to reward the contribution our customers make all year round to Fairtrade and celebrate our success. We’ll be thanking our customers for helping us become the biggest retailer of Fairtrade products through targeted offers.

In aisle we will be highlighting our Fairtrade products and talking about some of our key 100% categories.

We will also be encouraging colleagues and customers to take a ‘Step for Fairtrade’ which is the Fairtrade Foundation theme for the event this year. A step can be anything from swapping your tea at home to Fairtrade – or a bigger step, like getting your friends and family to make the change, too.
