8th, May, 2018
Places are being snapped up quickly for IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire, and competitors are being urged to sign up quickly or risk being disappointed.
Under starter’s orders on 10 June will be more than 2000 competitors, all hoping to complete a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile half marathon.
The event will start at Chasewater, and for the first time ever, will culminate in Stafford Town Centre.
The event is quickly reaching the last 100 places, so people are being urged to book their space quickly or risk losing out.
Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Growth, said IRONMAN, the county council and Stafford Borough Council are working hard behind the scenes to help ensure everything goes smoothly over the weekend.
Mark said: “IRONMAN is a great boost for the local economy, businesses and tourism and as a county we are looking forward to giving a warm welcome to the competitors and their supporters once again in June.
“Staffordshire has always provided a spectacular backdrop for the event and the great reception from local residents along the route will undoubtedly help spur on competitors over the finishing line once again.”
Last year, an estimated £1.4 million has been spent on food and accommodation by competitors, and a further £1 million spent by spectators during the weekend.
As part of the IRONMAN competition there will be temporary roads closures in place on Sunday June 10 to ensure the safety of the competitors and spectators. People can find out more and plan ahead if need be by visiting www.ironman.com.
Councillor Mike Smith, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Stafford Borough Council, said: “It is great news that nearly all of the places have gone. So if you don’t want to miss out on competing in this exciting event – especially with the new run course being staged in the heart of the county town – then you will have to be quick.
“Things are really shaping up for this to be an impressive event and, with the competition finishing in the town’s Market Square for the first time, I am sure there will be a great turnout of spectators cheering the competitors home.”
Dan James, Race Director for IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire said: “We are preparing for another full field of athletes at the 2018 Staffordshire IRONMAN 70.3 race. The spectator support around this should be amazing.”
